Finding meaning after feeling stuck trying to make a difference
My first guest podcast episode talking about the experience of feeling disillusioned and overwhelmed as a changemaker and the journey to find my own path towards the future I want to see.
Hello!
I hope you are all doing well and have been enjoying springtime and watching the flowers bloom.
It’s been a while since I’ve shared here.
After finishing the first series of my podcast, I’ve been enjoying one to one coaching, hosting a group coaching programme, organising different events and doing some talks. At the same time I’ve been doing some deep reflective work on - who do I want to be? How do I want to show up and what do I want to talk about? What do I really want to be doing? Who am I really here to support? And how can I best do that?
It has taken a lot of my own inner work to get clearer on the answers to these questions, to feel into what I want to create and offer, to let go of what no longer aligns with this vision and to develop the confidence and comfort within myself to live and share that.
So when I was invited onto the Decide for Impact podcast by Erno Hannink, I was delighted to be able to share much more of what’s at the heart of what I do - through sharing more about my story and the internal struggles I went through pursuing purpose-driven work, and the learnings and realisations that have helped transform the way I think about making an impact.
In the episode, I talk about:
How I felt disillusioned by the purpose driven work I was doing and the questions I was asking myself about whether I was really making a difference.
How I noticed I wasn’t being fully myself in these jobs and was adjusting who I was to fit in and the impact that had.
How I often felt like I had to prove my worth through achievement and being in good jobs that were ‘doing good’.
How I felt anxiety, grief and overwhelm about the state of the world and I didn’t know how to hold it all emotionally and the implications that had.
How the more I learnt, the more I felt conflicted about my work, as I didn’t feel like I was contributing to the future I wanted to be part of.
I talk about what helped me to transform these feelings, from learning more about myself, what I’m good at, who I truly am, what was important to me and what kind of change I wanted to create - to learning about emotional intelligence, mindfulness and how our minds work - which all helped me to find more peace with myself and with what is happening in the world and to find what’s mine to do which has led me to feeling much more hopeful, energised and content.
For those who might resonate with these feelings or with my experience, I know it can feel lonely, disheartening and heavy.
Yet there is another way. And I want to do my part to support people to find another way to create change.
I am creating a movement and an offering that will support people, who are experiencing feelings similar to the ones I talk about, to be able to create change from a place where we feel more grounded, fulfilled and at peace, where we focus on our own growth, becoming the best version of ourselves and live out the vision we want to see for the future now.
If we want to change the world, we can do that best by embodying the change we want to see and that has to (and can only) start with ourselves and ripple from there. This means letting go of certain ways of being, ways of thinking and old beliefs that are holding us back, and really getting to know and accept ourselves, understand what our minds are capable of and what it means to live in alignment with ourselves and the future we want to see.
I will be sharing more about this on Linkedin if you want to follow me there and I will use this platform for occasional longer reflective writing. I’ll soon be sharing what I’ve been working on which will be home to a newsletter, coaching offers and workshops for the work on Becoming the Change.
I’m excited to share it with you all soon and thank you for all your support so far.
Here’s our conversation - you can watch it below, or listen to it through the link or find it on any podcast app.
