On accepting what is

An exploration of what it means to live practicing acceptance - acceptance of ourselves, of others and of what's happening outside of us.

In this episode of On Becoming the Change, I explore the practice of accepting what is and how learning to accept ourselves, other people, and the world as it is can be one of the most direct ways to find greater peace, freedom, and ease.

Inspired by a week where lots of things didn’t go as I’d hoped, I reflect on how much energy we can spend resisting reality, wishing things were different, or believing that we, other people, or life situations should be something other than they are. We explore why acceptance is not about giving up, becoming passive, or lowering our standards, instead about meeting life as it is so we can respond more consciously from the present moment.

We look at self-acceptance as the foundation for meaningful change, and why we cannot shame, criticise, or reject ourselves into becoming who we want to be. Instead, real transformation often comes through self-compassion, understanding, and learning to accept and embrace all parts of ourselves. We also explore how the parts of ourselves we struggle to accept often shape how we judge and relate to others, and how curiosity and understanding can deepen our relationships and connection, as well as the importance of understanding and honouring our own needs and boundaries.

We also explore how acceptance can be helpful when dealing with the state of the world. In times of uncertainty, complexity and change, acceptance can help us let go of the internal battles we have with reality and can help us to be with what’s here now and allow ourselves to feel, without getting carried away in stories. And how we can find more clarity and ability to respond when we trade expectations for acceptance.

Throughout the episode, I share reflections from teachings of mindfulness and my take on teachings from Thich Nhat Hanh, Tara Brach, Carl Jung, and Peter Crone, alongside practical ways to cultivate acceptance in everyday life.

This episode is for anyone who finds themselves wanting to practice more acceptance in their lives and reflect on how acceptance can bring us back to the present moment, where we often find more peace, energy, clarity and joy and feel more like ourselves.
